Page 4 - Study of Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2020
P. 4

  Conclusions
Within the reporting boundary, the 2020 GHG emissions results show that there was a 59% reduction compared to the 2019 emissions results. This emissions decline is equal to the amount of carbon sequestered by 6,005,177 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. Furthermore, a total of 284,186 tonnes of Co2 equivalent (CO2e) was emitted in 2020. Part of this reduction was due to a decrease in total production but on a per barrel produced basis, Gran Tierra Energy still showed a 32% reduction in GHG emissions/bbl.
GTE continues to take actions to lower GHG emissions by utilizing excess natural gas from our operations to generate power instead of flaring it. Gran Tierra’s major capital investments in voluntarily “Gas-to-Power” projects continue to be an important part of our efforts to reduce flaring. Gran Tierra has also supported nature-based projects, like the Costayaco Forestry Centre and NaturAmazonas which absorb and sequester significant volumes of carbon dioxide.
NaturAmazonas is expected to sequester ~8.7 million tonnes of CO2 through reforestation and conservation over the project’s lifetime
Reduction Initiatives to Minimize Emissions
In 2020, Gran Tierra’s largest producing asset, the Acordionero field was more environmentally sustainable because the company increased the energy generated through its Gas-to-Power projects. These exciting projects have significantly reduced the amount of gas flared at our operations by converting excess natural gas and use it instead to power our facilities. GTE has successfully converted major production facilities at Acordionero and Costayaco to run on gas produced in its fields, and the company made significant strides in 2020 to expand the effort to additional fields such as Cohembi, Los Angeles, Mono Araña, Moqueta and Vonu.
Gran Tierra also supports environmental projects that aid in carbon sequestration. Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric CO2. Through photosynthesis, forests and vegetation sequester carbon by capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converting it into organic matter used as a fuel source. Through reforestation and conservation efforts led by Gran Tierra, over 33,000 tonnes of Co2e is sequestered each year in the regions near GTE’s operations. Of the 33,000 tonnes, 72% of the total is sequestered from the reforestation and conservation efforts in the Putumayo region alone.
Gran Tierra has planted 838,740 trees through all of its environmental efforts
Gran Tierra conserved, preserved or reforested 1,624 hectares of land through its environmental projects
