Costayaco Forestry Center: An Innovative Reforestation Initiative
The Costayaco Forestry Center (CFC) established by Gran Tierra in 2010 in coordination with
the regional environmental regulator, Corpoamazonia is one of the most innovative reforestation projects in South America. The Center spans over 210 hectares in the Putumayo Department and is committed to cultivating and planting native species of trees in the area.
Through Gran Tierra’s commitment to reforestation efforts, the company has successfully grown 71 native species of trees, planted over 51,000 trees at the CFC and reforested over 166,000 trees across the Putumayo and Cauca Departments. Through programs offered at the CFC, over 49,000 trees have been donated to local communities and educational centers. As a result of all of its environmental reforestation and conservation efforts, GTE has planted over 560,000 trees.
In addition to the reforested land, the Center consists of a number of buildings on the property – offices, a training area and a greenhouse – all of which Gran Tierra voluntarily built in 2013
to support research and education programs. Through these programs, the Center works to increase environmental awareness by providing educational opportunities for communities to learn about the importance of protecting the forests and the environment.
Gran Tierra has planted over 560,000 trees through all of its environmental efforts.
