2018 Corporate Responsibility Report
“Our programs are designed to keep all of our employees safe.
We understand that we need
to create and maintain a culture that prioritizes safety through effective communications.”
– Milton Garcia, Safety Manager
THE SAFEST YEAR IN COMPANY HISTORY
2018 was again the safest year in Gran Tierra’s history, exceeding 2017’s strong performance. This took place despite the company’s highest activity level in its history, averaging over a million hours worked every month.

A number of factors have contributed to this performance: one is how Gran Tierra’s management team is prioritizing safety in all activities, fostering a “safety-first” mentality throughout the organization. Other reasons include Mision Vida, the company’s year-old proprietary system for safe operations whether staffed by employees or contractors. Gran Tierra holds weekly and monthly meetings with the senior management of all the contractors to provide an opportunity for them to focus on the importance of safety, analyse incidents and develop measures to fix any issues. Learnings from one situation are quickly communicated throughout the whole company.
Standardization of practices across all activities has also played a major role in increasing operational integrity and safety. This activity was an important part of the integration of multiple corporate cultures after Gran Tierra’s acquisitions of three companies over the last few years. Beyond that, creatively leveraging new safety practices and technologies, of which several examples are highlighted in this chapter, have also played a large role in GTE’s recent performance.
