Dozens of women from Miraflores and the surrounding areas carry out planting work at the Guayuyaco Agroforestry Center. Cacao seedlings are spliced together to develop high quality and resilient varieties of the crop. The facility is expected to produce 1 million seedlings every year.
The Importance of Culture Change
With 150,000 hectares of deforestation taking place in Colombia each year, it would take 150 facilities like the Guayuyaco Agroforestry Center, to offset the environmental damage being done across the country. Education
and culture change will be critical to the effort.

Total trees planted through Gran Tierra initiatives, including the Costayaco Forestry Center and NaturAmazonas
Gran Tierra has committed to reforesting 1,000 hectares of land and securing and
maintaining 18,000 hectares of forest through the NaturAmazonas project in the Putumayo Basin.
The NaturAmazonas project
is expected to sequester approximately 8.7 million tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime

What is most important is to show that
real change is possible, can happen quickly and efforts like this can be replicated to slow deforestation.
